Houston Le Jeune

Houston’s broadcasting career began over 40 years ago when he started working as a disc jockey and newscaster at KEUN radio station in Eunice, Louisiana. He was hired at the age of 20 in June of 1956 because of his ability to speak French fluently. He offered listeners of KEUN a chance to hear the morning news in French along with some Cajun French music. Many of the listeners spoke French only, so this afforded them the opportunity to get local news including obituaries and weather in a language they could understand. In the latter part of 1956 he pioneered live broadcasts of Cajun music from the bandstands of local nightclubs. This was a first for the area and a real treat for Cajun music lovers.

During his career he not only broadcasted in French, but also in English at KMRC in Morgan City, Louisiana and KHMO in Houma, Louisiana.

In 1975 Houston began working weekends at KAJN radio station delivering Cajun French music to its listeners. He continued this until about 1979 when KAJN changed its music style from country and Cajun to gospel music.

In 1985 he returned to KEUN in Eunice and to his love of French broadcasting. In 1985 he was instrumental in starting the Cajun Appreciation Day with proceeds going to a different charity organization each year.

In 1987 his speech was affected by a severe stroke disabling him from broadcasting for several years. With the help of his wife, who shared his devotion for Cajun broadcasting, he was able , after her death, to continue solo broadcasting until his retirement.
